Desperate Housewives: Happy (late) Halloween!

Happy Halloween! What's that? I'm about a week too late?!

Well, tell that to last night's Halloween episode of "Desperate Housewives" which ABC weirdly aired five days after the holiday everyone on Wisteria Lane was celebrating. In fact, most of the characters and events in this episode just seemed kinda off.

And things had started promisingly enough with Bob and Lee (and their terrible Halloween lawn decorations) inviting neighbors to their Halloween party. I'm still enjoying these two more than I thought I would, especially after Bob's (accurate) line that he was the more likable of the two, although the jury's still out on whether that's because he's the most butch. They approached Bree first, who somehow became the most "homofriendly" of the neighbors.

Although I thought it was pretty silly and stupid of Bree's daughter Danielle to get caught looking out of a window when she's supposed to be in hiding, I'll forgive that oversight only for the fact that it led to Andrew having to dress up as Cher. Also, Danielle more than made up for it later by showing up as Bree (pictured) at the costume party. Even funnier was everyone's reaction to Danielle's less than flattering impression. Eventually Danielle had to leave the party when her water (predictably) broke and she went through the speediest delivery I've ever seen on TV. The resulting scene with Danielle having trouble leaving her baby (as Bree had predicted) after being so eager to get "it" out of her was nicely played by Joy Lauren.

It's too bad that was pretty much the main highlight of the Halloween party, other than the insanely good costumes everyone was wearing (as affluent characters on a TV show). I guess I was expecting it to be at least as good as the baby shower or charades night from past episodes.

Instead, we got stuff like Lynette playing Elmer Fudd with a possum. And while I get that the Scruffles the possum was supposed to symbolize the cancer that had intruded into her home and affected her family's life, I thought Lynette's storyline was too cheesy last night. We found out that the cancer is gone, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the character. Felicity Huffman is a good enough actress to balance the funny/serious aspects of Lynette's cancer storyline, but even she couldn't make possum hunting interesting.

Also, even though we had some movement in the Gabby/Carlos/Edie/Victor saga, that storyline hit a few false notes. I like that Carlos finally manned up and left Edie. We found out the person he was paying off was from the government, and he had moved his offshore money, so Edie could no longer blackmail him. Now, if you rewatch the scene of him leaving Edie (not sure why you would go back to rewatch THAT scene) you get a better sense of why he was so calm.

Unfortunately, Gabby ran into a bit of trouble in leaving Victor, as Victor's father offered her a hefty cash settlement (did we find out HOW hefty?) to stay with him through his gubernatorial run. That part makes sense to me (as does Gabby seriously considering taking the money). The part I didn't get was Victor all of a sudden caring about Gabby enough to scrap his entire schedule when he was unwilling to do that less than four episodes ago. I don't really think the writers know what to do with Victor anymore (though I can understand him having daddy issues), and mostly it feels like they're just pulling obstacles out of a bag to delay the inevitable Carlos/Gabby reunion.

Meanwhile, the only thing I really enjoyed about Susan's storyline other than Robert Forster ("Jackie Brown") showing up to play Mike's non-remorseful murderous father was the fact that there was some real life character development for Mike. This season I've noted that he's become noticeably jerkier toward Susan this year and last night, after a genetic counseling session, Susan became obsessed with the idea that Mike may pass on to their child. Mike's dad mentioned that his son has some demons, so maybe that's why he's been more impatient and meaner toward Susan this year. Or it could be because she drives people crazy.

So what'd you think of this episode? Honestly, why do Bob and Lee have such TERRIBLE taste? How did Adam know about Bree's fake pregnancy? Is it just because he's an ob-gyn or did I miss a scene where he actually discovered it? Does that mean his wife Katherine knows? Finally, when are they going to finally have Teri Hatcher SHOW that her character is pregnant?
